Curriculum Overview

The Montessori Journey

At Ardee Montessori House education is conceived as a continuous and thoughtfully designed journey, rooted in the principles of Montessori education and guided by the child’s natural development, curiosity, and growing independence.

Each stage of the Montessori journey builds upon the last, offering children a carefully prepared environment in which they can explore, make choices, develop concentration, and progress at their own pace.

Our approach places equal emphasis on intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and personal development. Through purposeful work, hands-on experiences, and meaningful interactions, children develop the confidence to think independently, solve problems, collaborate with others, and become responsible learners.

NIDO · A Gentle Beginning

Nido, the Italian word for “nest,” is a thoughtfully prepared Montessori environment for our youngest children.

Inspired by Dr. Maria Montessori’s understanding of the young child’s extraordinary capacity to absorb from their environment, Nido provides a calm, nurturing space where children can move, explore, communicate and develop independence at their own pace.

The environment is carefully designed around the child’s needs, with child-sized furniture, accessible materials and purposeful activities that respond to the child’s sensitivities to movement, language and order.

A dedicated movement area supports crawling, pulling up, cruising and those precious first steps, while carefully selected materials invite exploration, concentration and purposeful engagement.

Nido is also a gentle introduction to community. Children experience the environment alongside their parents, supported by their Mentor, allowing confidence and independence to develop naturally within the security of a familiar presence.

A beautiful beginning to the Montessori journey, where curiosity is nurtured, independence takes root and every small step matters.

Foundation · Red

From the age of two, children enter RED, a thoughtfully prepared environment designed to nurture their growing independence, curiosity and confidence.

This is the age of “I can do it myself.” Purposeful Montessori activities such as dressing frames, pouring, spooning, care of self and care of the environment help children develop coordination, concentration, fine and gross motor skills, and independence.

Language is woven naturally into everyday experiences. Mentors introduce precise vocabulary, read stories, sing songs and engage children in meaningful conversations. Grace and Courtesy experiences help children learn to greet, wait, carry, care, share and offer help as they become confident members of their community.

The carefully prepared environment allows children to make meaningful choices, work at their own pace and experience the satisfaction of mastering new skills. Each accomplishment strengthens their sense of capability, responsibility and love for learning.

Blue · The Children’s House

The Blue environment is a vibrant Montessori community where children’s growing understanding is nurtured alongside their character, confidence and sense of responsibility.

This is the Children’s House, a mixed-age community where children learn with and from one another. Older children deepen their understanding by sharing what they know, while younger children are inspired by what they see their peers accomplish.

The prepared environment offers a rich progression of Montessori experiences across Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Cultural studies. Children are given the time and freedom to choose purposeful work, develop concentration and experience the satisfaction of completing a work cycle, from making a choice to restoring the environment.

Within this balance of freedom and responsibility, children develop self-discipline, perseverance, integrity and respect for others.

Blue is a place where independence grows into responsibility, curiosity grows into understanding, and children grow together as confident members of a community.

Yellow · The Children’s House

The Yellow environment is a calm, purposeful and thoughtfully prepared Montessori environment where children deepen their independence, concentration and growing understanding of the world.

Designed around the children in its scale, proportion, flow, comfort, safety and beauty, the environment invites purposeful movement, exploration and sustained engagement. Every material has a place and a purpose, allowing children to make meaningful choices and experience the satisfaction of doing things for themselves.

This is where the foundations of literacy, numeracy, practical life, sensorial exploration and cultural understanding are thoughtfully developed. Children work with their hands, refine their senses and gradually move from concrete experiences towards abstraction and deeper understanding.

Within the freedom of a carefully prepared environment, children develop self-discipline, perseverance, responsibility, confidence and respect for themselves, others and their surroundings.

EYFS · Children’s House

In the final year of the Children’s House, children deepen their Montessori journey through purposeful work, growing independence and a more connected understanding of the world. Their learning is aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), giving families and the next stage of school a shared framework to understand each child’s development and progress.

The Montessori environment and the Mentor’s role remain rooted in choice, concentration, hands-on learning and independence.

The EYFS framework covers Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design. These areas naturally connect with the child’s Montessori work rather than being taught as separate subjects.

By the end of the House, children are increasingly able to choose their work, plan, sustain concentration, complete a work cycle and restore the environment independently. They develop not only foundational literacy and numeracy, but also the confidence, self-discipline, responsibility and dispositions needed to become capable learners.

This final year provides a thoughtful transition from the Montessori Children’s House to Cambridge Primary at The Ardee School, ensuring continuity while preparing children for the next stage of their educational journey.

Areas of learning

From Practical Life to Cultural Discovery.

The Montessori curriculum is an integrated journey of movement, independence, language, mathematics, sensorial exploration and cultural understanding. Through purposeful hands-on work, children build knowledge while developing concentration, coordination, curiosity, confidence and a growing understanding of themselves and the world.

Practical life

Everyday activities such as pouring, spooning, dressing, food preparation and caring for the environment develop coordination, concentration, order and independence. Real work gives children the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and experience, “I can do it myself.”

Sensorial education

Montessori sensorial materials help children refine their ability to observe, classify and make connections. Through colour, dimension, texture, sound, shape and form, children organise their impressions of the world and their minds are prepared for further learning.

Language

Language develops naturally through rich conversation, stories, songs and purposeful interactions. Montessori materials such as Sandpaper Letters and the Movable Alphabet connect sounds, symbols and meaning, allowing children to move gradually from spoken language towards reading and writing.

Mathematics

Mathematical thinking begins with concrete experiences. Number Rods, Spindle Boxes, Golden Beads and Bead Chains allow children to explore quantity, number, sequence and operations with their hands before gradually moving towards abstraction.

Cultural & Scientific Exploration

Art, music, movement and creative expression give children opportunities to observe, create, communicate and express themselves. The arts are naturally integrated into the child’s experience rather than treated as separate subjects.

Creative & Performing Arts

Art, music, movement and creative expression provide opportunities for children to observe, create, communicate and express themselves. The arts are integrated into the child’s experience rather than treated as an isolated subject.

Peace, Grace & Courtesy

Respect begins with everyday interactions. Through Grace and Courtesy, mindfulness and Peace Curriculum experiences, children learn to listen, communicate respectfully, care for others, resolve differences and contribute positively to their community.

Movement & Outdoor Learning

Movement is integral to Montessori development. Outdoor experiences, physical education and opportunities for leadership support coordination, confidence, resilience, collaboration and responsible decision-making.

Choose the environment, then visit it.
